When I picked it up on the beach, I didn't even notice the spiral in the corner of what I believe is an operculum. I was just drawn to its translucent amber color. Initially, I thought it belonged to a mussel, but it turns out it is a sort of trapdoor for a marine snail's shell. Its edges are a little broken, but once again it feels hopeful to find such beauty in something that is not quite perfect.
